Is this the end of Konami with Hideo Kojima?

Update 20/3/15

Further developments regarding this story have emerged, and it doesn’t sound good.

An anonymous source told Gamespot that a fallout between Konami and Kojima Productions has led to the studio being given restricted access to corporate internet, emails and phone. The source also states that the studio will now have limited capability to lend their appearance to the promotion of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

It is believed that the employment status of the Metal Gear team has also undergone changes, with some high level staff such as Hideo Kojima now working as a contractor. Once the contract is up, Hideo Kojima will leave Konami according to the source.

Hideo Kojima has remained silent on the matter.

The internet is awash with rumours this afternoon that Hideo Kojima may soon depart from Konami.

Rumours began circulating after it was noticed that Hideo was delisted as an ‘Executive Content Officer’ on a page on the Konami website. Adding fuel to the flames, @Koji_Pro_Live tweeted that the account would be moving over to @metalgear_en.

More worryingly however, it would now seem that the words “A Hideo Kojima Game” are being removed from all Metal Gear Solid assets along with the KojiPro logo. Aside from it being hard to get accustomed to, this also seems quite disrespectful to Hideo, who has driven the Metal Gear series from the very beginning.

With rumours mounting, a Konami representative said: “Konami Digital Entertainment, including Mr. Kojima, will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements.”

I guess we’ll have to hold on to find out exactly what is happening between Konami and Hideo Kojima but it certainly doesn’t look good. With development on Metal Gear Solid 5 pretty much done, the games quality should not be affected, but long term fans may be disgruntled if Hideo’s role in its development is downplayed due to his departure.

We also have to wonder what will happen to Silent Hills if the rumours are indeed true. We were looking forward to Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro bringing new life back to the series after experiencing the terrifying P.T. but all hope may now be lost.

We’ll bring you more news on this story as it develops.
