Top 10 Indie Games of 2015

8. Rack n Ruin

rack n ruin review

Created by ex-Diablo artist Tyler Hunter, Rack n Ruin is a wonderfully retro adventure reminiscent of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The hand-drawn environments are fantastic and any fan of the SNES classic will instantly be taken on a nostalgic journey.

This isn’t a Zelda rip-off though. Rack n Ruin is a fantastic game in its own right, taking classic games and turning them on their head: this time you play the bad guy. Playing as Rack, a minion of the underworld, it’s your task to create as much pain and suffering as possible. Trouble is, you’ll be going through plenty of pain and suffering yourself as the game is no walk in the park. It’s a welcome challenge though, and as you make your way through increasingly challenging dungeons filled with classic puzzles, it’s hard not to be charmed by this gorgeous old-school RPG.

7. Contradiction

Contradiction 3-min

It’s safe to say you’ve probably never played a game quite like Contradiction before. An “all-video murder mystery”, it’s a fantastically entertaining vaudeville drama that will keep you gripped from start to finish. Playing as Inspector Jenks, it’s your job to solve a murder in the little village of Edenton, which just happens to be full of the creepiest and most ominous people you’ll ever meet.

The acting is purposefully over the top, and that just makes Contradiction all the more enjoyable. For its low budget, the production value is brilliant and the enjoyable video sequences more than make up for the somewhat basic gameplay.  Let’s hope a Contradiction 2 surfaces in 2016…

Editor in chief // Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a particular soft spot for indie adventures. If she's not gaming, she'll be building Lego, reading a thriller, watching something spooky or... asleep. She does love to sleep.
