Free Game Friday: Home

Not only is Friday a day to celebrate the oncoming weekend, get a takeaway and go out for a couple of bevvies with your friends and family, for us here at GameSpew it’s time for #FreeGameFriday. That’s right Spewers; it’s the best day of the week.

Another week has come and gone it seems. Those of you in school have probably started your classes already – so good luck this year! Some of you may not be happy to have to return back to learning and are in need of a nice heartwarming break from all the chaos. This week’s Free Game Friday, Home, available on, is the perfect remedy for someone who just needs a quick get away into another world.

Home tells the story of an adventurer for hire. He takes a variety of jobs and contract in order to earn his living. A lot of the jobs involve monsters, criminals, or other kinds of dangers. You live by yourself during the worst winter there’s been in years. As the story progresses, depending on your choices you may be able to change your reclusive life into something much more. If you prefer to be a lone wolf that is a possibility as well.

Home is a work of interactive fiction so the majority of the gameplay is clicking through dialogue. I assure you, though, that the writing is so well done you won’t want to stop clicking. Other than that when you aren’t out working (which you are told about only through dialogue) you can move back and forth with the arrow keys in your small home. If you pick up friends in your travels you can also speak to them in between working and sleeping.

As I mentioned the best part of Home is its dialogue. It may not seem like an interactive fiction game can be very enjoyable but playing through home was like reading a short story where you can occasionally make difficult choices. Do you let a thief who robbed the King get away because his family is starving or do you take the coin back from him? It’s up to you to make the choices and let your gameplay play out how you like.

So that’s it for this week’s Free Game Friday. Home is a really heartwarming, very short, interactive fiction that I highly recommend for something with five minutes to spare. If we get the chance we may also take a look at The Journey Home the sequel to Home. If you decide to check out Home give us a shout in the comments below and let us know how you like it or you can always Tweet us using #FreeGameFriday, we love hearing from you! Here’s to a great weekend and see you next week!
