Not only is Friday a day to celebrate the oncoming weekend, get a takeaway and go out for a couple of bevvies with your friends and family, for us here at GameSpew it’s time for #FreeGameFriday. That’s right Spewers; it’s the best day of the week.
Today for Free Game Friday we're taking a look at The Journey Home: the sequel to last week's game Home. Home told the story of an adventurer for hire as he came across different people that needed his help during his adventures. The adventurer, an alchemist, a blacksmith and the blacksmith's daughter eventually made a home together when they realised that they had become a family. The Journey Home picks up a few years later where you take on the role of the smith's daughter, all grown up and now an adventurer herself.
The story for The Journey Home is a little different from its predecessor, but it has a lot of the same elements within it. You have to make quite a few difficult choices during the game: will you rest when you need to or make the most of your precious time? Will you kill?
Much of the gameplay is made up of clicking through story and dialogue, but occasionally, you'll find yourself engaging in combat against demons. You can use the arrow keys to move and jump, and your mouse to swipe with your sword and dodge. These combat moments add a welcome interactive element to the game so that it doesn't feel like simply reading through a short story.
What makes The Journey Home so enjoyable the combination of all its elements put together. The acoustic background music adds a soothing tone to much of the story, and the dialogue never seems forced or unrealistic. One of the best parts is that it takes only five minutes to complete so you it fits in nicely to any break, and you can play again and again, making different choices and getting different outcomes. It doesn't ever feel like a chore to play through because of how quickly it's over.
That said though, I would definitely play a longer version of the game because I loved it so much.
So that's it for Free Game Friday this week. Home and The Journey Home were both such pleasant experiences that I hope there are more in the future. If you decide to take a look at either let us know how you like them in the comments below or on Twitter with #FreeGameFriday, we love hearing from you! Here's to a great weekend and see you next week!
