Not only is Friday a day to celebrate the oncoming weekend, get a takeaway and go out for a couple of bevvies with your friends and family, for us here at GameSpew it’s time for #FreeGameFriday. That’s right Spewers; it’s the best day of the week.

This week’s Free Game Friday has been a long time coming – we’re taking a look at Hearthstone. Hearthstone originally released in 2014 and since then has had four additional adventures and five expansions added to the game. This, along with many other big and small changes over the years, means Hearthstone has secured a very large playerbase. After three years, it still manages to keep its current players coming back for more along with bringing in new players every single day.

Hearthstone is a cross-platform online card game based on the lore of World of Warcraft. It’s completely free to play but does include the ability to purchase cards in game with real money. Despite what some may think, however, it’s entirely possible to play the game successfully without ever spending a penny. I enjoy playing on a semi-regular basis and have never bought any cards.

In Hearthstone you build a deck made up of 30 cards. The cards are either minions or spells, all of which cost a certain amount of mana. In the first round of the match both players start with one mana, and in each subsequent round you get one extra mana i.e round two, two mana, round three, three mana, until you reach ten. If you play a minion it gets placed on the board, and a spell gets used immediately. Of course there’s much more to it than that, but that’s the basic idea of the game. Some minion cards do special things like attack immediately or buff other minions – but it’s much more fun to discover those things on your own.

What I love most about Hearthstone is getting to play it with my friends and comparing deck strategies. It’s a really fantastic game to try out if you like games such as Magic the Gathering which uses *gasp* real life cards to play. You’ll definitely enjoy it if you like the lore of World of Warcraft – especially when it comes to choosing your favourite class. My favourite is shaman because you get summon totems!

So that’s it for this week’s Free Game Friday. I’ve been playing Hearthstone for years and am glad I finally got a chance to recommend it. If you decide to give Hearthstone a try be sure to tell us what you decide to put in your deck down in the comments below or on Twitter using #FreeGameFriday, we love hearing from you! Here’s to a great weekend and see you next week.
