What better way is there to enjoy a great game than by sharing the experience with a friend? Back in the ’90s there really was no other way to play co-operatively other than with your gaming-partner-in-crime by your side, hammering away at your respective controllers.
However, the dawn of online gaming has meant that co-op play has shifted from sitting on the same couch to being anywhere in the world. Thankfully, there’s still plenty of games out there offering excellent local co-op experiences, and so we take a look at the top 20 couch co-op games on PlayStation 4…
20. Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition
Originally released on PlayStation 3, this Apocalypse edition of Housemarque’s excellent Dead Nation bundles the base game with all the available DLC whilst giving everything a nifty HD upgrade.
A twin-stick shooter with considerable depth, Dead Nation sees you fight your way to safety out of a zombie-infested city across a challenging ten level campaign. Whilst the game is an immense amount of fun in single player, it’s best enjoyed in couch co-op with a friend sat by your side, enabling you to cover each other’s back or simply just trash talk them when they get swamped by a herd of zombies. With a wide range of enemies, frenzied action and a raft of upgrades to acquire, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition is an awesome way to spend some time on the couch with a friend.
19. Surgeon Simulator
Bob’s in hospital and he needs life-saving surgery. A heart transplant, an eye transplant – even a brain transplant – he needs it all, and only you can save him! If you’ve never played Surgeon Simulator, well, you’ve probably never laughed so hard at a game before. With purposefully designed awkward controls, you have a wealth of tools – from a hacksaw to an electric drill – to take Bob under the knife and give him brand new organs.
Without a doubt, Surgeon Simulator offers one of the zaniest couch co-op experiences on PS4: you’ll control a hand each, and we promise chaos will ensue. If Bob makes it through the operation alive, or without losing a serious amount of blood, we’ll be shocked. But it’s safe to say this is one of the funniest games you can play with a friend.
