Not only is Friday a day to celebrate the oncoming weekend, get a takeaway and go out for a couple of bevvies with your friends and family, for us here at GameSpew it’s time for #FreeGameFriday. That’s right Spewers; it’s the best day of the week.
This week’s Free Game Friday, other than being a bit of a mouthful, is a pleasantly simple game available for download on itch.io and is about packing up your items in boxes. We’re taking a look at Packing Up the Rest of Your Stuff on the Last Day at Your Old Apartment but, in the interest of not going insane, I’ll shorten it to Packing Up.
In Packing Up you play as a person packing up the last few items left in their old apartment. There’s only thirty or so items left to pack up into three boxes – one small, one medium, and one large. This is where all of the gameplay comes in, trying to fit everything you possibly can into your final three boxes. Packing Up is almost a puzzle game as you have to decide whether or not it’s better to put mugs on top of books, the lamp upright or on its side, and whether or not you want to pack those old CDs at all.
Packing Up may sound a bit simplistic – but that’s what makes it so entrancing. The game only takes about 15-20 minutes to beat and I’ve played it three times. There’s something satisfying about figuring out exactly how to fit all of your items in these boxes. I found myself wondering whether or not it was even worth it to try and fit my huge stove pot in one of my boxes or if I should just donate it to charity instead. One of my playthroughs I donated everything that wasn’t something personal like a picture. It may sound strange, but Packing Up is really just 3D Tetris with real life items – except unlike Tetris you can choose to donate your items if you don’t feel like trying to fit ’em into your box.
Packing Up is an unexpectedly great game that I highly recommend checking out if you have a free 15-20 minutes. And, just as a favour to me, if one of your friends ask you what you’re playing you should use the full title just to watch them get really confused. “Please stop talking to me I’m playing ‘Packing Up the Rest of Your Stuff on the Last Day at Your Old Apartment.'” It’s great fun.
If you do decide to give it a try be sure to let us know how it goes in the comments below or on Twitter using #FreeGameFriday, we love hearing from you! Have a great weekend everyone and see you next week!
