If you played The Witcher 3, chances are you spent just as much time sat in a tavern playing Gwent than you did out in the wild, slaying beasts and finding Ciri.
A standalone version of Gwent, the card game created especially for the world of The Witcher, was announced to be in development last year. Now getting closer to its full release, a public beta of Gwent is available to download on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Not played Gwent before? It’s a head-to-head battle played out with cards. Both you and your opponent will draw 10 cards, each with a value and a combat type – either melee, ranged or siege. Each turn, you’ll place a card onto a board separated into the three combat type. In its simplest terms, the aim of Gwent is for the cards you place to have a greater value than your opponent’s – it sounds simple, but in reality it requires a lot of tactical thinking to be successful.
Of the public beta, Marcin Iwiński, the co-founder of The Witcher 3 development studio CD Projekt Red, said: “Public Beta is an important step towards GWENT’s final release… I’m extra curious how all of the community feedback we’ve incorporated will resonate with both current players and those who’re just starting. Please keep the feedback coming, we’re listening!”
