JCB Pioneer: Mars Lands on Steam Early Access Today

Want to drive a JCB? Want to drive it on Mars? If you answered yes to any of those questions, now you can. If you answered no, well, what the hell is wrong with you?

Atomicom’s sandbox survival-exploration game JCB Pioneer: Mars is available from today on Steam’s Early Access program. The British-based developer worked closely with JCB to design futuristic yet faithful JCB vehicles that allow you to explore, dig and mine your way around the red planet.

It sounds like a crazy idea, but after getting some hands-on time with the game earlier this year, it surprisingly works — and quite well. It’s sandbox meets hardcore survival: Mars is a hostile planet, and your limited oxygen supply coupled with the planet’s deadly environment means that death and danger are literally around every corner.

To succeed, you’ve got to master time management, be a skilled explorer — and be a wizard behind the wheel of a JCB. JCB Pioneer: Mars isn’t easy; in my hour-long session with the demo I died a couple of times, but every death just made me more eager to learn from my mistakes and do better next time.

Whether you’re into space, survival sims, JCB vehicles, or sandbox adventures, JCB Pioneer: Mars has something that’s worth checking out. Even though it’s only Early Access, the current build of the game feels much more complete than most, and there’s plenty of new features that’ll be rolled out down the line, too.

It’s available now for £18.99.
