Anyone that owns an Oculus Rift headset has probably played Lucky's Tale at some point.
Free for all Oculus Rift owners, Lucky's Tale is a simple but colourful platformer that surprised us with just how much fun it is to play, but VR doesn't really do too much to enhance it. We were pleasantly surprised then, when it was announced as a title that's coming to Xbox One.
With the name Super Lucky's Tale though, we, as well as many others, were unsure as to what to actually expect. A remaster of Lucky's Tale with more content seemed to be the most likely prospect, but after sitting down for some hands-on time with the game at a recent Xbox One X showcase event, we were happy to find that it's essentially a bigger, better sequel.
In our time with the game we ran, we jumped, we swiped at enemies with our tail; we even made use of the new dig mechanic to find hidden collectables. Mixed in with the more typical platforming levels were more tricky, and entirely optional, challenge type levels that made us use our brains. And then we encountered a boss which we quickly dispatched by learning his attack pattern, just like the good ol' days. Suffice to say, we walked away with big smiles on our faces.
Super Lucky's Tale is everything we look for in a 3D platformer. Cutesy, colourful visuals? Check. Bucketloads of collectables? Check. Pesky bosses? Check. Brain teasing puzzles? Check. Intuitive, responsive controls? Double check. It really does seem to have it all. In the time we got with the game we experienced all of the above and more, and it left us eager to experience the full game when it's released early in November. Set to retail for a budget price, it won't put a dent in your bank balance either.
