I rather liked EVERSPACE when I reviewed it earlier this year. At no point, however, did I think "you know what? This game needs to be harder."
It seems like many must have done, though, as ROCKFISH Games has now updated the game with a Hardcore Mode.
Rather than being a selectable difficulty, EVERSPACE's new Hardcore Mode sits separate from the main campaign - y'know, just so you can't make use of any permanent perks that you've acquired. Instead, Hardcore Mode starts you with a fixed set of perks that can only be upgraded as sectors are completed. And that's not all; each time you enter a new sector you also have to choose between a series of handicap modifiers.
Modifiers range from the game not pausing while you're repairing or crafting items, to leaking fuel. There's even a modifier that makes the game all retro. Whichever ones you choose, you're sure to have your work cut out for you, though those who do manage to make their way through the trials and tribulations of Hardcore Mode will find themselves awarded with a revamped end sector and final battle.
The update is available now on Xbox One and Windows 10, so if you've completed EVERSPACE and fancy a new challenge why not give it a whirl? And if you've never played EVERSPACE before but want a great-looking rogue-like space shooter, it comes highly recommended.
