It’s safe to say that Deck13’s The Surge made a positive impression on us last year.
I played through the base game and its A Walk in the Park expansion and was thoroughly impressed, while Sean put forward that it was the most underrated game of 2017. I can’t say that I disagree – with a Metacritic score hovering in the seventies, some certainly weren’t as enamoured with the game as we were. In any case, it seems like it has performed well commercially, as Deck13 has today announced that a sequel will see the light of day in 2019.
The Surge 2 is set to build upon the features and gameplay mechanics that made the original such a success. The hardcore combat will be more brutal and tactical than ever before, with the limb targeting system being expanded. There’ll be more abilities, weapons, implants and drones to allow for more varied character builds. And an upgraded and improved game engine will allow for bigger, more sprawling environments. In fact, The Surge 2 is set to take place in a devastated city, which is a far cry from the original game’s setting.
In development for consoles and PC, more is likely to be unveiled about The Surge 2 in the next couple of days, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. Hopefully we’ll still get to play as Warren and the awesome Prisoner by Stumfol will remain on the soundtrack.
