Assassin’s Creed Rogue, perhaps the most criminally overlooked entry in the series, is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
It perhaps would have been a bit more of an enticing prospect if it had arrived before the utterly outstanding Assassin’s Creed Origins, but trust me, if you’re yet to step into the shoes of Shay Patrick Cormac – Assassin turned Templar – there’s never been a better time. Although, if you’re an Xbox One gamer, you could have played the Xbox 360 version of the game quite a while ago thanks to backwards compatibility. And if you’ve got an Xbox One X, it’ll even make it look a little nicer.
But just how does playing the Xbox 360 version of Assassin’s Creed Rogue on an Xbox One compare to the new Remastered edition? Is it worth buying just for the enhancements if you’ve already played it before? And if you’ve not played it, is it worth saving a few quid by opting to play the standard version? If you’ve got an Xbox One X and a 4K TV then personally I’d suggest you bite the bullet; Assassin’s Creed Rogue really does look nice in 4K. But if you’re playing at 1080p on a standard Xbox One, the choice is harder to make.
The video below shows the introductory scene of both the Xbox 360 and remastered versions of the game being played on an Xbox One X. Give it a watch and see for yourself how they differ.
In 4K, the difference is quite clear. The remastered version of Assassin’s Creed Rogue has sharper textures, increased shadow resolution, and runs with a more consistent framerate. On Xbox 360 it was a pretty good looking game, and on Xbox One X at 4K it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Drop the video resolution to 1080p, however, and while the remastered version still looks noticeably better, there’s not quite the gulf that there was.
So, should you buy Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered on Xbox One? The answer is an unequivocal yes if you’ve not yet played it – it’s one of the best Assassin’s Creed games available. But if you have already played it before then it comes down to how desperate you are to replay it. It certainly looks nicer, especially on Xbox One X, and there are a few extra tidbits of content thrown in for good measure, but that’s about it. Available for just under £22 on Amazon.co.uk though, it’s not going to put much of a dent in your bank balance.
