How to Solve The Kingmaker’s Trials in Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom

If you’re just starting out in Ni no Kuni II, you’re in for a real treat!

Early on in your journey, playing as the young Evan, you’ll set out on a quest to go find your Kingmaker. In order to do so, though, you’ll have to proceed through the Kingmaker’s Trials — three puzzles that will test your logic and skill. They’re the only true puzzles you’ll come up in the game, and they’re really fun to try and work out, but can be a real headscratcher if you’re not quite sure what to do.

The Kingmaker’s Trial tells a story that’ll sound pretty familiar to you if you’ve played the first Ni no Kuni game. Each trial, of which there are three, is a maze that you must make your way around, activating a series of statues in the right order. Some statues also need to be turned around before you activate them, and clues on their order and position are given at the start of the level. Laid out on a grid made up of individual tiles, most will fall away when you step on them, so you can’t backtrack on yourself. There are also a number of bonus orbs in each level that you can collect for extra rewards.

If you’re in a hurry to get on with the action and to see the rest of Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom unfold, then don’t worry. We’ve got you covered here with a guide on how to solve each of the Kingmaker’s Trials. There’s text solutions for each, or, if you’d prefer, you can watch the video.

How to solve the first Kingmaker’s Trial

Head over to the book and read the story. Pay attention to the coloured words — these represent each statue, and the order they appear in the story indicates the order that you must activate them.

Here, the order is boy, magic wand, then fairy. We also know that the fairy must be turned to face the magic wand.

Here are the steps you’ll need to take to complete the level (please note: directions given assume the camera remains looking straight forward towards the exit):

  • From the book, move two squares up, three to left, then two up. You’ll now be at the boy statue.
  • From the boy, move two squares to the right, two squares up, and four to the right. You’ll now be at the magic wand statue.
  • From the magic wand, move one to the right, two down, one left and one down. You’ll now be at a wheel that can change the direction of the fairy statue.
  • Turn the fairy 180 degrees – two turns – so it is facing back towards the magic wand.
  • Move back up one, left three, down one, right one, down two and right two. You’ll now be at the fairy statue.
  • From here, you can simply follow the remaining path up to the book to complete the level. Don’t forget to collect the last orb to your right before reading the book.

How to solve the second Kingmaker’s Trial

The correct order of the second Kingmaker’s Trial in Ni no Kuni II is harpistpistolierwizardboy (facing the monsters), and monsters.

Here’s the step by step guide, again, assuming the camera remains in the starting position, facing the exit of the puzzle.

  • From the book, move up one, left one, up one and left one. You’ll now be at the harpist statue.
  • Move left three, up one, left one, up three, left one, up one, left one. You’ll now be at the pistolier statue.
  • From the pistolier, move up one, right two, down two and right now. You’ll now be at the wizard statue.
  • Move up two, right three, and down one. You’ll now be at the wheel that rotates the monsters statue. Turn 180 degrees (twice) until it’s facing the boy.
  • Move down three, right four and up three until you’re at the wheel that rotates the boy statue. Turn 180 degrees (twice) until it’s facing the monsters.
  • Move up one, left two and down one. You’ll now have activated both the boy and monster statues. Continue down to the book to complete the level.

How to solve the third Kingmaker’s Trial.

The third is quite a bit more complicated than the other two before it, but using the same principles as the first two Kingmaker’s Trial, it can be solved with a bit of patience. The main difference here is that in the centre of the puzzle is a giant stone dragon with a permanent platform that can be rotated from each side of the maze.

The order you need to activate the statues here is: wizardpistolier (facing tower), harpist (facing soldier), soldiermonsterfairy (facing tower), boy (facing dragon).

Here’s the step-by-step guide on how to solve the third Kingmaker’s Trial in Ni no Kuni II, and just as before, the directional instructions assume the camera is still facing in its default position towards the level’s exit.

  • From the book, move two right, two up, one right, one down, one right, one down, one right. You’ll now be at the wizard statue.
  • Move two right, two up, and four left. You’ll now be at a wheel that rotates the central dragon. Interact with it twice.
  • Move left one, up one, left two, down two, and left two. You’ll now be at the wheel to rotate the pistolier. Interact with it three times so it is facing the tower.
  • Move up one and left one. You’ll now have activated the pistolier statue.
  • Move up two and interact with the wheel once.
  • Move right two, up two, left three, up two, left one, up two, and right one. You’ll now be at the wheel that turns the harpist. Interact with it three time until it’s facing the soldier.
  • Move right two, up two, and left two. You’ll now activate the harpist, soldier and monster all at once.
  • Now we’ll take a tiny detour to collect the optional orbs. Move left two, down four, left one, down two, right one, down four, right one, down one, up seven, and right four. You’ll now be back at the dragon wheel. Turn it once.
  • Move right one, down one, right two, up one, right two, down one, right one, down one, right one, down two, right one, up one, right one, up one. You’ll now be at the wheel to turn the fairy. Interact with it twice until it’s facing the tower.
  • Move left one and up one to activate the fairy.
  • Move up one, left two, up two, left three and down one. You’ll now be at another wheel that controls the dragon. Turn it twice until the dragon is facing you.
  • Move one left to activate the boy statue, and then continue forward to the end.

That’s it – you’re all done! If you’d rather see the Kingmaker’s Trials in action, watch the video below.
