Four Ways to Discover New Games

There are so many new video games releasing all the time. How on earth are you supposed to keep up with them all?

In fact, in 2017, over 7,672 games released on Steam alone. Factor into that console-exclusive games that release on PS4, Xbox One and Switch, and then mobile games – apparently 500 new games are submitted to the iOS store every day – there are way too many games for any regular human to keep up with.

It also means that good games that are worth paying attention to are often lost in a lot of noise. If you want to discover a new game that isn’t the next God of War or Call of Duty, how are you ever meant to find it?

It’s not always easy, but we’ve got a few simple tips to help you find that next hidden gem that you’ll want to tell all your friends about.

Use a search engine

Ah yes, Google (or Bing, we don’t discriminate). Whether you want to be looking at popular live dealer casinos, or finding games that are coming to your console of choice in the next month, a search engine is often the best place to start. Many websites – ourselves included – write monthly (or sometimes even weekly) round-ups of new games that are due out that month.

While many of the entries are usually games you’ll have already heard of, there will likely be a couple of games that may have slipped under your radar. Do a quick search for “upcoming games” on the format of your choice and you might be surprised with what you find.

Check Metacritic

Although a review aggregator, Metacritic is also a pretty authoritative resource when it comes to upcoming games. It catalogues all new releases as well as all upcoming releases, and sorts them by format. While not every game coming out is listed, the release calendar is fairly comprehensive.

The new release lists are also very useful as these tend to be much more complete – and you can also see the games’ Metascores at a glance. No Metascore yet? It’s probably a game that’s slipped under most publications’ radars.

Look at the “coming soon” section on the digital store

Whether you game on Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation or Steam, every digital store has both a “new” and “coming soon” section. Once again, the coming soon listings won’t list every games – the release dates of lots of indie games aren’t often announced until the day they come out – but it pays to keep an eye on it. Don’t assume that every new game will be shown off to you on the front page; sometimes you have to go digging to find something that hasn’t had as much attention brought to it.

Follow curators on Steam

One of Steam’s features is that it allows users to become curators – creating lists of games of their own choosing. Finding curators with similar tastes to your own is a great way to get some well-founded recommendations, as well as more than likely coming across some games you’ve never heard of before.

Remember, it’s healthy to step outside of your comfort zone once in a while, so don’t be afraid to try something new. Follow our tips to find a new game that would have otherwise passed you by – it may just end up being your next favourite game.
