Lost in Harmony released on Switch last week. If you’re a fan of music rhythm games, you’ll definitely want to give this one a try.
Putting you in control of a skateboarding dude named Kaito, Lost in Harmony has you scrolling down the screen, endless runner style, dodging obstacles, jumping over barriers, collecting sparkles and inputting button prompts, all in time to a pretty eclectic soundtrack. There’s over 30 environments to travel through in the game, and each one is just as beautiful as the last.
Comprising a number of original songs and recognisable classical music, Lost in Harmony’s soundtrack is an absolute delight. It fits with the action on-screen down to a tee; whether you’re dodging moving traffic or moving out of the way of a soaring eagle, the action and music complement each other perfectly. Playing along to the music of a famous composer makes for such a refreshing change to the electro tracks we tend to hear in rhythm games, and that alone makes Lost in Harmony a game worth recommending.
It’s no walk in the park, though. Even on easy mode, Lost in Harmony puts you under pressure. There’s a lot to keep your eye on in the game; even slower tracks will pack in as much action as possible to keep you on your toes. If you’re not dodging obstacles on your skateboard, you’ll be pressing on-screen button prompts in time to the music. And at the same time you’ll need to collect the rows of sparkles that add to your score. There are several layers of gameplay, and it takes some serious practice in order to master them all.
To top it all off, each level of Lost in Harmony is sandwiched between short narrative segments. Telling the story of Kaito and his girlfriend Aya, it’s a sweet reprise between gameplay. It’s not entirely needed – rhythm games generally exist just for the sake of rhythm, after all – but the added context is a nice touch that helps to further Lost in Harmony from the rest of the crowd.
For £6.29/$6.99, Lost in Harmony isn’t the longest, most feature-packed game you’ll ever play, but what is there is an absolutely beautiful audiovisual treat that will have you hooked until you perfect each track.
