1Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
Why are pirate games so few and far between? Black Flag showed how great it feels to sail on the wide open sea as a fun loving pirate. It also introduced Edward Kenway, a man down on his luck, but looking to gain his riches through the pirate life. The story wasn’t much to write home about (hard to do at sea anyway), but the gameplay made Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag the greatest game in the franchise.
Naval combat was such a brilliant addition. Sailing the open seas and sinking foes was completely addictive. It also added an incentive to collect the resources needed to upgrade the Jackdaw: to prepare to take on even the mightiest fleets in the British Empire. Boarding ships and duelling against captains on their sinking ships was magnificent, and Black Flag had perfected the combat system from previous entries. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag showed that it’s a pirate’s life for me, you, and everyone else who played. Without a doubt the best pirate game you’ve ever heard of (sorry, not sorry, Sea of Thieves).
