Over a year after it originally arrived on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, SteamWorld Dig 2 is now available on Xbox One.
This is not some Enhanced Extra Value version that we often see on Xbox when games hit the format long after others; it’s just the same game that we’ve already seen. But it’s a very good game regardless, and I for one am very glad to be able to play it again on my format of choice.
In case you missed it when it released back in September 2017, SteamWorld Dig 2 is a follow-up to 2013’s SteamWorld Dig that combines spelunking with a Metroidvania.
You’ll explore mines, digging further down each time you go, uncovering secret areas and collecting valuable minerals and gems. Use the profits you make to upgrade your equipment – more powerful pickaxes, bigger bags and more better armour make your journey much easier – and onward you go.
It’s a very fun gameplay loop, with a story that’ll take you around 10 hours to complete; longer if you want to uncover all the secrets that SteamWorld Dig 2‘s world holds.
When I reviewed the game back in 2017, here’s what I had to say:
Steamworld Dig 2 is the true sequel fans have been waiting for, building on the foundations laid by the original but making everything bigger and better. The gameplay is fundamentally similar, but a more in-depth upgrade system and a much bigger map to explore mean this is, in pretty much every way, a more refined — and much more enjoyable — experience.
If you want to experience the game on Xbox One, whether for the first time or simply relive the adventure, it’s available now on the Xbox Store for £16.74/$20.
