If you’ve ever finished a story and were incredibly disappointed to not be able to discover more about the characters, then you’ll understand the brilliance of Steins;Gate Linear Bounded Phenogram.
I recently reviewed of Steins;Gate Elite and was able to play its follow-up, Steins;Gate Linear Bounded Phenogram. Exclusive to PlayStation 4 and Steam, players that purchase Steins;Gate Elite will receive Steins;Gate Linear Bounded Phenogram along with it absolutely free.
I would highly recommend completing a playthrough of Steins;Gate before playing this follow-up as it does make references to the main game throughout.
Linear Bounded Phenogram features a collection of 10 new stories written by different authors, including the Zero Escape series scenario writer Kotaro Uchikoshi. Each of the 10 stories is a new scenario involving each member of the Future Gadget Laboratory. Only two of the stories feature Steins;Gate’s main character Okabe, so if you’re looking for more interactions between the other characters this is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
It can be difficult to describe the story of a visual novel (or group of visual novels in this case) without spoiling anything, so essentially each chapter contains three to four hours of writing and touches on the same time travel themes that you’ll find within in the main game. None of the routes seem to connect with any other and are all distinctly different, whether it be a serious route or a silly route.
One of my biggest complaints about Steins;Gate Elite was the exclusion of stills, making the game feel like an anime that you were forced to click through. Phenogram does away with that and bring the stills back making it, in my opinion, a much more fluid experience.
For those that might want more of a taste of Steins;Gate after finishing Elite, Linear Bounded Phenogram is a great place to go. If, for no other reason than to see more of Alpaca Man.
