If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then this recent game of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was literally insane.
I may not be the most seasoned veteran when it comes to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but I know more than just the basics. I may not be able to headshot my foes from miles away or be able to throw grenades with wizard-like accuracy. But I do know how to play the objective.
Earlier this week, I was playing a competitive game on a map called Mirage. We started as the counter-terrorists trying to prevent either bases A or B getting bombed. After a few wins, the entire opposition team developed a winning tactic: rush A!
By rushing one area of the map, we found it hard to counter the opposition’s speed and skill, and they quickly managed to notch up a high score lead. It was halfway through the game and we were nearly 10 points down from about 15 games. We thought we were down and out. Until…
Well, until we swapped roles and it was my team’s turn to be the terrorists. The opposing team could no longer rush A; we could simply take the bomb to B and plant our bomb there.
Well, at least we thought they couldn’t carry on rushing A.
After a couple of scrappy games as terrorists, we realised that they hadn’t abandoned their plan of bee-lining to one half of the map. My allies and I were gobsmacked as we continually ran to bomb site B and planted our bomb with absolutely no confrontation.
Not one of their team members decided to fray onto that side of the map, even on the final game, until after we had planted the bomb. We ended up winning the game by the slimmest of margins as they continued to not learn from their failing strategy.
It was the most bizarre game of CS:GO I have ever played. And let it be a lesson to you: just because a strategy works the first few times, doesn’t mean it’ll always work.
