The latest instalment in the long-running historical strategy franchise has been announced: Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Steam in early 2020.
The announcement comes as great news to the many fans the franchise has attracted since the release of the series’ first game back in 1985. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV will mark a return to the classic gameplay of earlier entries such as RTK9, readopting the ruler-based system where all of your actions can be performed from a single map.
A new Evolved Artificial Intelligence system is also being touted as bringing an extra challenge to players across repeat playthroughs. Characters will apparently have more individuality, with each character’s specific policies and ideals affecting the experience of the game if they are ruler.
The series developer Koei Tecmo has also been receiving a load of praise recently for its work on Fire Emblem: Three Houses for Nintendo Switch. Developer of the Fire Emblem series, Intelligent Systems, chose Koei specifically because of its experience with tactical gameplay, and reportedly let the Romance of the Three Kingdoms team do the majority of the work on the game.
