Honestly, there’s an obscene number of potentially great games being released in September. To buy them all you’d need to be absolutely loaded, especially coming off the back of August which also provided us with some heavy-hitters.
From Final Fantasy VIII Remastered to Gears 5, there’s something for everyone, no matter what format they play on or what genres they’re into. So without further ado, here are the games to watch out for this September.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
Release date: 3rd September

It’s Final Fantasy VIII remastered for console and PC, what more do you need to know? If you’ve never experienced this brilliant game before or wish to play it once again with spruced up visuals and some new features, get it bought.
Catherine: Full Body
Release date: 3rd September
Formats: PS4
Catherine gets the remake treatment, adding in a new love interest for Vincent and doubling the amount of puzzles. What’s not to love? Read our review if you need convincing.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Release date: 3rd September
Formats: Switch and PC
Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been available on PS4 and Xbox One for ages, but now Switch and PC gamers get to play it. Read our review of the Xbox One version if you want to find out more about this package of Spyro remakes.
Torchlight II
Release date: 3rd September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One and Switch
If you’ve never played the excellent action RPG Torchlight II before because you don’t play games on PC, here’s your chance to play it on console. This is a game for Diablo lovers, only it’s less dark.
River City Girls
Release date: 5th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
WayForward is treating fans of side-scrolling beat ’em ups with River City Girls this month. It looks neat and promises to be quite a lengthy adventure, so keep an eye on it.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Release date: 6th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One and PC
Love Monster Hunter: World and want more beasties to kill? Your prayers have been answered. Iceborne is a proper expansion, adding plenty more meat to Monster Hunter: World‘s already nourishing bones.
NBA 2K20
Release date: 6th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
If you like basketball you’re probably keen to play NBA 2K20. We don’t blame you, it looks like it might have got a cracking story mode.
Gears 5
Release date: 10th September
Formats: Xbox One and PC
Potentially one of the best games of the year, The Coalition reinvigorates the Gears of War formula with open world and RPG elements. Gears 5 will hit Game Pass at launch, so if you’re a subscriber you won’t have to pay anything extra to play it. And if you have Game Pass Ultimate, you get to play it four days early, too.
WRC 8
Release date: 10th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
Released earlier this year, DiRT Rally 2.0 may have been excellent, but rally fans ought to keep their eyes on WRC 8, too. With its revamped career and a host of other improvements, this game might surprise people. We’ll have a review soon.
GreedFall
Release date: 10th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One and PC
Open world RPG fans should definitely be looking forward to GreedFall. Everything we’ve seen of it leads us to believe that Spiders is taking things to the next level with this release, and it has us excited.
Blasphemous
Release date: 10th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
With its sumptuous pixel art, Blasphemous grabs your attention. Question is, will players have the resolve to tackle it? If you like a challenge, put this game on your radar.
Borderlands 3
Release date: 13th September

Borderlands 3 is finally out this month, and we simply can’t wait for it. Promising insane action, mountains of loot and plenty of humour, we’re confident that Borderlands 3 isn’t going to disappoint.
Daemon X Machina
Release date: 13th September

A mech-based shooter, we’d kind of forgotten about Switch exclusive Daemon X Machina. Will it be good? Who knows. But it’s worth keeping an eye on.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Release date: 20th September

Link is back! This remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening looks absolutely charming. If it can capture the magic of the original release, we’ll be very happy indeed.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered
Release date: 20th September
Formats: PS4, Switch and PC
Don’t miss this second chance to play the excellent Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. It’s remastered for PS4 and PC, while the Switch apparently just gets the bog-standard version.
The Surge 2
Release date: 24th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One and PC
From what we’ve played of it, The Surge 2 seems like it might be excellent. It’s shaping up to be everything you could hope for in a sequel, which means we can’t wait to play the finished product. Read our preview of it to find out more.
Contra: Rogue Corps

Contra is back with Rogue Corps. It could be good, it could be terrible; we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, we’re excited to get our hands on it and find out.
Cat Quest 2
Release date: 24th September

The original Cat Quest was absolutely adorable, and Cat Quest 2 looks like it might be even more so. This game might just take fans of cute things and action RPGs to heaven.
Code Vein
Release date: 27th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One and PC
Dubbed the anime Dark Souls, Code Vein hasn’t had the most glowing of previews but we’re still eager to go hands-on with the full game.
FIFA 20
Release date: 27th September
Formats: PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
It’s FIFA 20, of course it’s going to sell like hot cakes. If you want early access to the game, pick up the Champions Edition. Or if you’re a PC gamer, subscribe to EA Origin Premier.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition
