SNES Games are Coming to Nintendo Switch Online

A lot of great new information came out of last night’s Nintendo Direct, but one announcement shone more than the others.

SNES games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online! And We couldn’t be happier. NES games have been available on the service since its launch last year, and Super Nintendo games have long been requested.

Nintendo has heard our cries, and finally, the classics we all love are available to play on Switch. The only catch is, of course, that you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. But for £3.49 a month (or £17.99) a year, it’s now more value than ever.

Not only do you get access to online features, great games like Tetris 99,and an ever-growing library of NES games (currently sitting at almost 50 titles), you’ll now get access to 20 SNES classics, too.

We lamented the loss of the Virtual Console with the launch of the Switch, but what we’re getting now with the online membership is so much better. The Virtual Console that we saw on 3DS and Wii required users to purchase each title they were interested in individually. Granted, there was a larger selection, but for the price of only two or three VC games we’re getting a massive library of 70+ classics.

The full list of SNES games is below:

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Stunt Race FX
  • Super Puyo Puyo 2
  • Pilotwings
  • Super Tennis
  • Kirby’s Dream Land 3
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • Breath Of Fire
  • BRAWL BROTHERS
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Ghouls’n Ghosts
  • SUPER E.D.F. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE
  • Star Fox
  • Demon’s Crest
  • Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics
  • F-ZERO Super Soccer

We can all agree that there are some true classics on there. Super Mario World? Yes please. Super Metroid? Yes please. A Link to the Past? YES PLEASE.

The SNES library will become part of Nintendo Switch Online tomorrow, 6th September. If you’ve been hesitant about purchasing a membership, perhaps now is the time. It’s truly incredible value.

Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a wee nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a soft spot for story-driven adventures and open world escapades. If she's not gaming, she's probably cooing over pictures of baby animals or watching re-runs of Friends for the 137th time.
