2K yesterday announced the founding of a new game studio, Cloud Chamber, which has started working on the next game in the BioShock franchise.
Cloud Chamber is the newest game development studio working under the 2K publishing label, with offices based at 2K’s San Francisco headquarters as well as a new location in Montréal, Québec. The publisher announced that the new studio has already begun work on the next BioShock game, which will be in development for the next several years.
“As we continue growing our product portfolio, we remain inspired by opportunities to invest further in our valuable IP, great people and their collective, long-term potential,” said 2K President David Ismailer. “BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”
Fans may be disappointed to hear that Ken Levine, the writer/director of both BioShock and BioShock Infinite (and writer of the series’ spiritual predecessor System Shock 2), will not be involved with the project. 2K seems to have faith in its new studio though, describing it as “a collective of storytellers eager to push the frontlines of interactive entertainment by making unique, entertaining and thoughtful experiences that engage the world”.
So will the next chapter in the BioShock franchise take us back to the depths of Rapture? Or perhaps the cloud city of Columbia? Or maybe a different location entirely with a whole new cast of characters?
It’ll probably be a long while before we find out, but that won’t stop us excitedly speculating in the years to come.
