Wondering how to redeem a code for a game or additional content on Steam? Here’s everything you need to know.
If you buy your Steam games directly from the Steam client, you’ll never need to input a code. But if you buy games from a third party, you’ll likely be given a code made up of random numbers and letters to input into Steam. Even if you buy a physical, boxed game from a bricks-and-mortar store, you’ll often get a Steam key in the box.
Thankfully, redeeming a code on Steam couldn’t be easier. You’ll need to have downloaded the Steam client onto your PC (which you can find here). Once it’s installed and you’re logged in, you’ll see a + icon and the words “add a game” in the bottom-left corner.
Click “add a game”, and a small menu will appear. Select the middle option, which reads “activate a product on Steam”.
From there, a new dialog box will pop up. It’ll provide you some information about redeeming a Steam key, so glance over it and click “next”, and then click “I Agree”.
Now you’ll be presented with a box in which to input your Steam key. Steam codes come in various formats, but the most common is 15 digits. Type your code into the box and then click ‘next’. Steam will confirm what the code you’ve just redeemed is for, and then will give you the option to download it instantly. If you don’t wish to install it straight away, the product will now be in your library ready for you whenever.
And that’s all there is to redeeming a key or code on Steam.
