How to Build Megastructures in Stellaris

Stellaris megastructures

Wondering how to go about building megastructures in Stellaris? Here’s everything you need to know.

The first thing you need to bear in mind is that megastructures are very expensive to builds, but they’re often well worth the effort. Not only do they look cool, they’re an excellent way to prove your worth to the galactic community. Here’s how to build every megastructure in Stellaris: Federations.

Before you start, you will need to have researched the physics technology megastructures. This is a rare technology that only appears late on in the physics technology tree. After that, you will have to then research the individual technology for each corresponding megastructure you want to build. For example, if you want to build a mega shipyard, you will have to research mega shipyards.

Each megastructure then has a list of conditions to where they can be built, and any first stage requires a construction ship to build. You’ll find the conditions you need to meet for each megastructure in Stellaris below. Once you have met these conditions, simply click on your construction ship, select “megastructures” and then the planet/star/system that meets the criteria.

Gateways

They can be built in any system (even with other mega-structures), outside the system’s gravitational pull of the system. Once built they will need to be activated for further alloys and credits.

Habitats

Can be built in any owned system around any planet that doesn’t have a mining/research station. This means you can have a habitat around a colonised planet.

Mega shipyard

You’ll need the Federations DLC to build a mega shipyard in Stellaris. It must be built around a star in a one-star system that has no other structures in it. This includes mining and research stations. Has three stages after building the initial site.

Dyson Sphere

To build the Dyson Sphere megastructure in Stellaris, you’ll need the Utopia DLC. You’ll also need the Galactic Wonders Ascension perk and have previously built a multi-stage megastructure. It must be built around a star in a one-star system that has no other structures in it. This includes mining and research stations. Has five stages after building the initial site.

Ring World

To build the Ring World megastructure in Stellaris, you’ll need the Utopia DLC. You’ll also need the Galactic Wonders Ascension perk and have previously built a multi-stage megastructure. Ring World must be built around a star in a one-star system that has no other structures in it. This includes mining and research stations. There must be no anomalies present in the system. It has five stages after building the initial site. When the frame is completed, all planets are removed from the system.

Science Nexus

Requires the Utopia DLC to build. Can be built around any planet. Has 3 stages after initial construction.

Sentry Array

Requires the Utopia DLC to build. Can be built around any planet. Has 4 stages after initial construction.

Matter Decompresser

To build the Matter Decompresser megastructure in Stellaris, you’ll need the Mega-corp DLC. You’ll also need the Galactic Wonders Ascension perk and have previously built a multi-stage megastructure. The Matter Decompressor must be built around black hole. It has four stages after initial construction.

Strategic Coordination Centre

You’ll need the Mega-Corp DLC. Can be built around any planet. Has 4 stages after initial construction.

Interstellar Assembly

You’ll need Stellaris‘ Federations DLC to build the Interstellar Assembly megastructure. Can be built around any planet. Has 4 stages after initial construction.

Mega Art Installation

You’ll need the Mega-corp DLC. Can be built around any planet. Has 4 stages after initial construction. The fourth stage also requires the Ancient Relics DLC and you cannot be a Xenophobic empire.
