If you’re playing through Mafia II: Definitive Edition, you’ll of course want your progress to be saved.
Originally released way back in 2010, Mafia II‘s save system is archaic, and disappointingly the Definitive Edition doesn’t change anything. Basically, there’s no manual save system whatsoever, so you need to rely on the game auto-saving your progress.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition saves at the start of every story mission, and also sometimes during them, too. Look for the vinyl record icon appearing in the top right-hand corner of the screen with the word “Saving” on it. When that appears, your progress has just been saved. It’s not always that visible in the heat of action, however.
If you’ve been doing activities in the open world to raise some cash, it’s wise to start a story mission to save your progress before turning the game off. Otherwise, you might return to find all your hard work gone to waste. Mafia II is a good game, but it’s a real shame that they haven’t updated the saving system. You’ll just have to learn to live with it.
