Today, Epic Games has unveiled a demo showcasing the next generation of Unreal Engine.
Unreal 5 is coming in 2021, opening up a whole new level of technology to developers. It was showcased as part of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, and the reveal comes in the form of an incredible looking tech demo.
The demo, titled ‘Lumen in the Land of Nanite’, showcases Unreal Engine 5’s new technologies, including Nanite geometry and Lumen lighting. There was a lot of talk of triangles, Chaos physics, Niagara VFX and other fancy-sounding tech – but all we need to know is that it looks absolutely stunning.
If you want more technical details about Unreal 5, we suggest you go and read Unreal Engine’s latest blog post, which delves more into the nitty-gritty of the new engine.
The demo is apparently running on PS5 technology, demonstrating that it’s very possible the future generation of games will look like this. Don’t get your hopes up though – tech demos always push the realms of a technology to their max; it’ll be a couple of years at least until we see this level of technology actively running in a game. Still, it’s exciting to see it in action.
Sadly, the demo on display is just that; it’s not a game that’s in development. At least, we don’t think so. We’d absolutely play it if it was. Give it a watch below – if you have a 4K TV, load it up on that and revel in how stunning this looks.
