It seems that Epic absolutely loves giving things away for free on its store.
And who are we to complain? The latest freebie to make the news is A Total War Saga: TROY. The next game in the Total War series will be launching exclusively on the Epic Games Store on 13th August. And here’s the catch: it’ll be free to keep to anyone who downloads it in the first 24 hours.
That’s right: anyone who downloads the game as soon as it launches will get it for free. After those 24 hours are up, A Total War Saga: TROY will return to its full RRP. It’ll remain exclusive to the Epic Games Store for 12 months.
Developer Creative Assembly has acknowledged that “we know some of you won’t like the Epic Games Store exclusivity”. It has been quick to stress that “this is an opportunity for TROY specifically”, going on to say the company has “no plans for future games to be Epic exclusives”. Then again, I suppose it depends how well this partnership works out.
Creative Assembly went on to say that it’s a partnership that allows the team to experiment: “We’ve always said that Saga titles allow us to experiment, and this is an experiment on a grand scale”. It’s also looking to the future of the series: “we’re at a time when we’re looking to invest more into the ongoing development of Total War this felt like an opportunity to really move the franchise forward by getting it in front of more people”.
A Total War Saga: TROY lands on the Epic Games Store on 13th August 2020. Make sure to download it in its first 24 hours if you want to bag it for free. It’ll become available on other PC storefronts, including Steam, after the 12-month exclusivity period is up in August 2021.
