1Up for a Roguelike challenge?

As frustrating as having to start over can be, there’s something alluring about the Roguelike genre.

So-called after the 1980 dungeon-crawling game Rogue, Roguelike games have become a phenomenon of their own. There are so many Roguelike games on PS4 that it can be hard to pick out the best ones. They come in many shapes and sizes, but have one thing in common: if you die, it’s permanent.

Exactly how Roguelike games handle permanent death varies from one game to another. Some erase all your progress, requiring you to start completely from scratch. Some allow for permanent upgrades, or perhaps a pool of money that carries over between characters.

Being taken right back to the beginning again can be frustrating, but that’s the joy of the Roguelike genre. When you inevitably fail, it lures you back in, desperate to try and perform just a little bit better. Losing your progress is always a stab in the heart, but making new progress is exhilarating.

We’ve rounded up 10 of the best Roguelike games on PlayStation 4, each of them offering something slightly different. If you’re up for a challenge, click on through and add some of these games to your library.
