It’s been nearly ten years since the last Bakugan video game, and so this November will be good month for fans of the franchise.

Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia is a Switch exclusive action RPG launching on 3rd November in the US and some days after elsewhere. It aims to enrich the world of Bakugan, providing a brand new story for players to make their way through. Even better, no prior knowledge of the franchise is required; the game has been designed to be welcoming to newcomers, though long-time fans will enjoy familiar characters cropping up here and there.

After creating their own original character, Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia will allow players to explore a world teeming with secrets to discover. They’ll of course assemble a collection of Bakugan along the way, and will rely on their strengths when engaging in friendly competition with other Bakugan owners, as well as fierce battle with nefarious villains. Ultimately your aim is to become the Champion of Vestroia, though there will be hardships to overcome along the way.

81 Bakugan are to feature in Champions of Vestroia, including the fan-favourite Leonidas from 2009’s Bakugan Battle Brawlers. Many players will want to collect them all, but only three can be placed in your team at any point in time. Who you choose to be in your team also needs to be carefully considered thanks to the five factions that they belong too. Each faction is strong against two of the others, but also weak against another. And then there are skills to consider.

WayForward is developing Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia and the studio is aiming for a game that’s easy to pick up but has surprising depth. With that in mind, you’ll be able to amass a wide collection of abilities and gear in the game, and use them to customise your player character and Bakugan. Your choices are non-committal, however, so you can also reverse a decision if it doesn’t pan out, or if you just want to experiment. As you use your Bakugan, you’ll also find that they can evolve, enhancing their abilities. It’s something you’ll need to consider as you vie to climb the Bakugan brawling ranks.

Combat is set to be a mixture of real-time and turn-based. You’ll take direct control of the player character, running around an area while the Bakugan take centre stage. You’ll spend your time collecting blobs of energy before flinging them at your Bakugan, enabling and enhancing their abilities. Then, when a Bakugan is ready to spring into action, they’ll unleash one of their abilities upon their opponent. Thanks to Bakugan models being shared with the Bakugan: Armored Alliance TV series, it all looks wonderfully authentic.

While making your way through Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia‘s story is likely to be rewarding enough, those who really want to test their skills will be happy to find that they can engage in thrilling online battles. Even better, they’ll take forward the Bakugan they’ve collected and developed in the game’s story mode. And don’t worry, there won’t be any microtransactions in the game, so there’ll be no pay-to-win shenanigans. Needless to say, online battles will be where the really skilled Bakugan players shine.

When it launches on Switch on 3rd November or shortly after depending on where you are in the world, a Deluxe Edition of Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia will be available. It includes an exclusive Ultima Dragonoid toy, so keep that in mind if you’re a fan. Otherwise, the game will also be available digitally via the Switch eShop. Though remember, you’ll need to be a Nintendo Switch Online member to play against others.
