How to Build Gates in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition

Wondering how to build a gate in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition? Here’s how to go about doing so.

The walls of Constaniopple held against many invaders. Hadrian’s Wall was built to defend against the Gaelic natives of Briton. And, the Great Wall of China was probably important too. What do all these historical walls have in common? Yes, of course. Gates!

And so the most powerful of inventions is needed again in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. Using gates is necessary to quickly block off your enemy while still maintaining your ability to navigate the map. As important as these are to the RTS genre, they aren’t simple to find in this game.

It took me quite a few skirmish games to work out how to build gates in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition; they aren’t simply on the build menu like in previous instalments of the Age of Empires franchise. In fact, you don’t use a settler at all to build them.

However, it is still actually all rather simple once you know how to do it. All you need to do is build a wall where you’d like the gate to appear. Then, select a suitable part of your wall, and upgrade it for 50 wood into a gate. It will then instantaneously turn into the gate you wanted. Easy peasy!

This way of building gates in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is perhaps not the best design choice; it will certainly change the way players quickly wall in the esports scene. But it does mean that you don’t have to keep switching from wall to gate while building, which does help speed things along.
