Getting a PS5? You’ll Want These Games to Show it Off

Spider-Man Miles Morales 2

The PS5 is finally here. Well, if you live in certain parts of the world, it is – others have to wait a little while longer.

Packing in some serious hardware, including a start-of-the-art SSD, the PS5 is surely going to provide us gamers with some sensational experiences in the coming years. But what about now? If you’ve been lucky enough to secure a PS5 for launch, what games should you pick up that demonstrate its power and provide hours of fun?

We’ve played most of the games launching alongside the PS5, and hopefully we can steer you towards the best. Some of these are available exclusively on PS5, while others you might already own on PS4 and will be able to download the PS5 version at no additional cost. But they all offer something that will give you that next-gen feel. These are the best PS5 launch games.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Spider-Man Miles Morales 4

A standalone expansion to Insomniac’s excellent 2018 superhero hit, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the PS5 launch game to get if you want a stunning display of what the hardware is capable of.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales simply looks stunning. The draw distance is vast, its textures are exquisitely detailed, and its lighting is sumptuous. In performance mode you get all of this and it plays at 60fps, too, which is incredible. Whack it into fidelity mode, however, and your eyes are treated to more visual splendour thanks to a brilliant implementation of ray tracing. The caveat is that it then only runs at 30fps, but that’s still good enough.

It’s not all about the visuals, though. Thanks to Miles’ Venom and camouflage abilities, the gameplay of Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been noticeably enriched over its predecessor. Honestly, if you’re after the best PS5 launch games, this needs to be at the top of your list. Or even better, pick up the Ultimate Edition of the game, which also includes a spectacular remaster of the original game.

Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls, one of the PS3’s most revered titles, has been remade. And if you’re lucky enough to be picking up a PS5 at launch, you might want to consider adding it to your games library if you’ve got the mettle for it.

When remaking Demon’s Souls, Bluepoint Games has tried to remain as faithful to the original game as possible. So, you’ll find a challenging adventure filled with grotesque creatures, haunting architecture and thrilling combat. This time, however, you’ll be able to battle your way through it at 60fps, or opt for a 30fps cinematic mode that further turns up the already mind-blowing visual splendour.

Either way, if you like games that are as tough as nails but oh-so rewarding to complete, consider Demon’s Souls one of the best PS5 launch games.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy A Big Adventure 3

After a fun 3D platformer that you can play alone or in local co-op with your friends and family when the PS5 launches? You need Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and maybe also some additional DualSense controllers.

This isn’t Sackboy’s first video game rodeo, but it’s the first time he’s truly been the star. The result is a 3D platformer that has smashed our expectations. The levels are colourful and varied, the controls are responsive, and every moment of it just brings joy. The local co-op aspects of it are the icing on the cake, as well as the customisation options for Sackboy himself. You can make him dress like a punk, for example, or Elvis, or even just go wild and adorn him with all sorts of bits and bobs. So, if you want to introduce some joy into your life, definitely consider picking Sackboy: A Big Adventure up alongside your PS5.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition 2

While it’s annoying that Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition isn’t a free upgrade if you already own the standard game on PS4, it’s a worthy purchase. It’s a budget price release, and packs in plenty of extra content to make it worth playing again. Not only is there a Turbo Mode, allowing you to play the game at 120% speed, there’s also Legendary Dark Knight Mode, which turns the difficulty up to 11 by throwing tonnes more enemies at you. Better yet, you can play the whole thing as Vergil, whose repertoire of abilities helps make Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition feel like a whole new game.

It’s the graphical options that makes Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition one of the best PS5 launch games, though. Straight off the bat, everything looks much better thanks to new lighting, physics and textures. You can opt for a 4K resolution with all bells and whistles turned on, or you can sacrifice a bit of visual fidelity for a smoother framerate. There’s even a 120fps mode if your TV can support it.

DIRT 5

DIRT 5 1 (1)

If you like rally games that aren’t too serious, you’ll love DIRT 5. With a huge range of tracks from around the world and an even bigger range of real-world cars to jump behind the wheel of, it’s one of Codemasters’ best games yet. It’s more arcadey than its hardcore sibling, DIRT Rally, making it more accessible for casual players, but that doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park. There’s still a lot to enjoy here for rally pros, especially if they crank the difficulty up.

What makes DIRT 5 one of the best PS5 launch games is its wealth of graphical options available. You can choose between quality, resolution or high framerate. Quality, of course, focuses on graphical fidelity, though it still targets 60fps. Resolution also targets 60fps, but prioritises resolution over graphical effects. And if your TV is compatible, high framerate mode allows you to play the game at an eye-watering 120fps. If you’re a racing game fan, this might be the best PS5 launch game for you.

Bugsnax

bugsnax

Bugsnax, made by indie developer Young Horses, might not be your typical console launch game, but it’s absolutely worth your attention. Cute, colourful and packed with heart, it puts you in the shoes of a journalist who’s arrived on the mysterious Snaktooth Island. Populated by a friendly species known as Grumpuses, it’s also home to the titular Bugsnax: part bug, part snack. It’s your job to learn all about them, and catch as many as you can.

You’ll spend your time chatting with villagers and completing missions, usually centring around catching bugsnax; that means setting up traps and using your noggin to think of elaborate ways to ensnare them. That’s fun in itself, but it’s getting to know the Grumpuses that’s the real joy of Bugsnax. On PS5, it looks fantastic too – creatures’ fur looks fresh from a Pixar movie – and it makes excellent use of the DualSense’s features. It might not be a AAA showstopper, but Bugsnax is still one of the best launch titles on PS5.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest entry in the long-running series, and many critics are calling it the best. Stunning visuals at 4K resolution and 60fps probably helps. You’ll be wowed by how beautiful the game looks.

Running around as a Viking in Anglo-Saxon England is a lot of fun; whether you’re fighting, growing your settlement or completing any of the story-rich missions. The world is your oyster in this instalment, and it looks and feels more realistic than ever. The Assassin’s Creed series has undergone some major changes in the last few releases, but with Valhalla, it’s finding a promising new identity.
