Stranded Deep, a PC survival-sim which sees you stranded in the Pacific Ocean, is available for free on the Epic Games Store.
Epic Games regularly gives out free games via the Epic Games Store, but this Christmas they’ve been doling freebies out to the tune of one a day. Today’s title, Stranded Deep, is worth picking up for two reasons (other than being free).
Firstly, it’s a pretty good survival sim. Your plane crashes but, unlike Bioshock’s protagonist, you don’t have the luxury of an art-deco sanctuary. Instead, you’re left to fend for yourself, harvesting food, crafting a shelter and so forth.
But, sooner or later, you have to make your way to another island when your resources run out and that’s where the terror kicks in. Even though you can see your destination, when your raft is being buffeted by sharks it feels like it’s a million miles away. Reviewing Stranded Deep, we picked up on the game’s rough edges, but still called it a “compelling survival sim.. more than worth diving into.”
The second reason to pick up Stranded Deep is its curio value; the game, created by Beam Team Games, has been in Early Access for over five years, hence the rough edges. In a rather suspect move, the Early Access version was ported to the PS4 and Xbox One, with no mention of its unfinished status.
Luckily, Stranded Deep hasn’t been abandoned and is well worth ten pounds of anyone’s money; now you can get it for free, you’ve no excuse not to pick it up. Just don’t blame us when you never want to go in the water again.
