Zniw Adventure is a Funny, 90s Style Point-and-Click Adventure

Getting the right gift for your loved ones is rarely easy.

You want to get them something they’ll really like and cherish that’s reflective of how much you love them. But it’s never as easy as you think. That’s the predicament in which protagonist Zniw finds himself, in Zniw Adventure from developer Azure Mountain. This adventurous dinosaur wakes up on her mother’s Hatch Day to realise she hasn’t remembered to get her a gift. It’s up to you to help her find a great one.

It wouldn’t be an adventure if finding the perfect gift for mom was straightforward. You’ll head into town, but right outside your home is the most beautiful, most perfect bouquet of flowers. First time point-and-click players may think, “easiest game ever” – but the more experienced among us will know that things are about to get much more complicated.

You soon come across a dinosaur much bigger than you that has lost his wallet. You help him find it – which is as easy as clicking around and finding it hidden in a bush – and then he buys the bouquet right under your nose. What are you going to do now?

Thankfully, Zniw is a quick thinker and has some other ideas. Unfortunately, after some ridiculously hilarious circumstances, players will soon find themselves stuck in a nearby forest trying to find their way back home. Now, not only do you still have to find the perfect gift for mom, but you have to worry about whether or not you’ll be able to get back in time to celebrate her Hatch Day at all.

Zniw Adventure plays just like a classic point-and-click game; you’ll spend your time finding items and using or combining them with another in order to progress. Annoyingly, there’s no way to highlight which items in each location are interactable, so it can be easy to miss things the first time around. Thankfully, the story is so fun that you’ll never be too frustrated by clicking around.

It’s hard not to be enamoured by Zniw Adventure‘s marvellous art style. Completely hand drawn, it uses frame-by-frame animation. The effect is striking; it looks like a 90s-style Saturday morning cartoon. It’s stunning, to be completely honest, and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face from the very first moment.

But possibly the most charming part of the game Zniw Adventure is its characters. Not just the lovable protagonist Zniw, but each creature she meets and talks to along the way is a delight to spend time with. From the very first dinosaur whose wallet you find to an angry small dino who hates having the ending of his comic book spoiled, each character adds depth to this colourful and detailed world.

Zniw Adventure is just lovely. Sure, it might suffer from some of the same knit-picky problems that anyone familiar with point-and-click adventures will be used to, but they’re worth persevering with. Nothing can take away the charm of these adorable dinosaurs. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the classic adventure genre, we’d recommend this one on its story and art style alone.

Zniw Adventure is available now on Steam.
