Explore both the real world and the spirit world in The Medium.
Bloober Team has been hard at work on its upcoming horror title The Medium. The team behind the popular horror games Layers of Fear and Observer had to recently push back the game to give itself more time to work on it. But with the release date fast approaching, players can watch 14 minutes of gameplay to see some of what they can expect when they pick up the game later this month.
What’s unique about The Medium is the players’ ability to explore both the real world and the spirit world at the same time. Bloober Team calls it “split-screen dual reality”. During the game, protagonist Marianne will explore both worlds separately, but it is only when those worlds come together that you can really appreciate the complexity of the gameplay mechanics.
But jumping between the real world and spirit world isn’t Marianne’s only ability. She also has a few psychic abilities up her sleeve. She can use her Spirit Shield to protect herself, and a Spirit Blast to fight back.
Players also get a glimpse of some encounters with The Maw in the gameplay video. The Maw, voiced by the talented Troy Baker, is Marianne’s biggest enemy in The Medium. It has its own set of devilishly dangerous abilities. In the spirit world, Marianne is able to see The Maw, but it can also see her. In reality, The Maw is invisible, but blind. Players will certainly have to be quick on their feet to survive and avoid The Maw in both worlds.
The Medium is set to release on January 28th for PC and Xbox Series X/S for $49.99/£41.74 with a 10% off discount before launch. Those that pre-order the game on Steam will receive the game’s original soundtrack as well as a digital artbook.
