5Pier Solar and the Great Architects
It’s painful not recommending this game from 2010 as it was originally intended on the Sega Genesis, but its Xbox One re-release is just as good. The game that started off as a Sega fan-site’s attempt at making a retro JRPG has become a charming journey down memory lane for anyone who grew up in the 1990s.
Filled with clichés and predictable story beats, Pier Solar and the Great Architects feels perfectly of the time. Most similar to the Lunar series of games, which undoubtedly is one of Pier Solar’s many inspirations, the game centres on three characters and their relationships as they explore a mysterious ancient world. A lot of folks may have turned their nose at this one when it first came around but make sure you don’t sleep on this delightfully retro gem.
