After years of messing around, a new Mortal Kombat movie is nearly upon us and there’s a trailer to prove it actually exists.
There’s still a couple of months till the new movie gets released, twenty-four years after Mortal Kombat Annihilation hit cinemas and, going by the trailer, it looks like a lot of fun. The trailer is R-rated so we can’t include it here but if you’re old enough to watch a little gore, click here to feast your eyes on it.
- Sub-Zero stabbing Scorpion, freezing the spurt of blood that comes out and then stabbing him with it.
- Kano being Kano
- Mileena demonstrating proper knife-cleaning technique.
- Big Goro
- Asian characters being played by asian actors.
It looks to follow the plot of the game reasonably closely, with a hero and his fellow fighters being chosen to defend earth in the Mortal Kombat tournament. And the fight scenes, or the glimpses we got, were suitable dramatic. Apart from the aforementioned blood-stabbery, Sub Zero makes a wall of ice and smashes Scorpion into it, a move that closely resembles an in-game fatality.
That said, we’re afraid it might be taking Mortal Kombat a bit too seriously. One of the best things about the original movie was that it was aware of how daft proceedings were. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, as Shang Tsung, was clearly having the time of his life – here, we’re giving glimpses of Mortal Kombat’s big bad but he doesn’t really stand out. Also, the movie’s main character seems to be called ‘Cole’ so while Liu Kang’s in there, he’s not the main hero, which seems odd.
Still, we’re definitely going to be watching it, because it’s Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat will be available to stream and watch in-cinema this April 16th.
