Lots of folks love a good period piece.
We like to imagine ourselves as lords and ladies living in 18th century Paris wooing one another into what will inevitably be an unhappy arranged marriage. Sorry – I just tell it like it is. There’s no telling what kind of drama you’ll find yourself in among other members of high society. Developer Joy Manufacturing Co. puts players into the shoes of a middle-class woman in France as she tries to juggle single life and her reputation in Ambition: A Minuet in Power.
There’s far too much going on in Ambition: A Minuet in Power to considered it a simple a dating simulator/visual novel. You play as the young Yvette who travels to Paris to meet Armand, the love of her life – but when she arrives no one seems to know who or where he is. Finding yourself homeless and loveless, your only option is to flirt, gossip and climb your way into aristocracy using every trick in the book.
Right away players will notice that Ambition plays a bit differently to your average dating simulator. In other games in the genre you might begin to romance one character and the rest of the events for the game revolve around that romanceable character. This time, you’re able to use Yvette’s calendar to decide where she might go. She has many parties to attend in order to increase her reputation so it’s important for players to manage her calendar accordingly. And she doesn’t necessarily need to choose just one person to woo.
One of the first things you’ll do in the game is purchase some new clothing to impress the lords and ladies. And, of course, what you wear to parties says a lot about you as a person (and your standing). Choose the wrong dress and you might lose valuable reputation, but choose the right one and you might find yourself climbing the ladder very quickly.
Once you’re dressed to the nines you can then begin attending parties and choosing who you wish to interact with. There are different factions in Ambition: A Minuet in Power for you to choose from and impress, so the more you interact with them, the more your reputation in those factions will increase. Say the wrong thing, and you might be kicked out of the faction (or at least heavily ignored) until your next soiree.
Ambition: A Minuet in Power is a much more political tale that you might think. Twisting yourself around to impress the lords and ladies of the aristocracy in order to survive the French Revolution is an impressive feat, and one that Joy Manufacturing Co. are doing well to emulate. And now that the game has been picked up by publisher Iceberg Interactive it’s sure to soon be a well-made and complete project.
If you’re looking for a new dating sim that might just redefine the genre, keep an eye on Ambition: A Minuet in Power. There’s no release date just yet, other than “2021”, but in the meantime you can wishlist it on Steam.
