DotEmu Announces Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in side-scrolling beat-em-up Shredder’s Revenge, and we couldn’t be happier.

In our misspent youth we fed way, way too much of our pocket money into Konami’s Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles arcade game. Yes, we did say “Hero Turtles”; this was when the British Board of Film Classification had a bee in its bonnet about anything to do with ninjas, or headbutts. Keanu Reeves could machine gun a security guard in the torso but Lawrence Fishburne wasn’t allowed to knock heads with with Hugo Weaving.

And now, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is set to reproduce the rush of annihilating Foot Soldiers, minus the loss in cashflow. Despite sounding like an unpleasant post-curry experience (insert your own turtles head joke here), Shredder’s Revenge is a dead ringer for the Konami beat-em-up that gave us such joy all those years back.

It’s being developed by Tribute Games in partnership with Nickelodeon and DotEmu, the company responsible for publishing and co-developing the ludicrously good Streets of Rage 4, which is as sterling a pedigree as you can get.  The reveal trailer, which you can view above, kicks off with the Turtles bursting out of the sewers. It’s a scene that will be instantly familar to anyone who played Konami’s original brawler.

Most of the trailer is taken up with this animation but the last few seconds offer a glimpse of actual gameplay, with Donatello, Michaelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo kicking Foot Clan bottom across several locations, confirming that the game will support four player at once. Unfortunately, there’s no release date as yet, nor is it clear which platforms the game will appear on. We’re wisely reserving our judgement till..

.. oh, who are we kidding? Dotemu and Tribute really can’t take our money fast enough.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
