The Best Weird and Wonderful Characters in Video Games

We love weird and wacky characters.

You know the type: the comic relief. The ones that make our video games a little bit lighter. The characters that make us laugh by their overall strangeness. Where would we be without our strange characters? Games would be dull, that’s for sure. Just like we love our weird friends, weird video game characters round out all great games. Honestly. We love them.

We’ve put together a list of six of the strangest characters in games we could think of. These are some of the craziest, weirdest folks that have ever graced our screens, and we love them all.

Tiny Tina from the Borderlands series

Let’s face it, there’s a lot of really weird Borderlands characters. The lot of them are ridiculous, funny and all around cuckoo. But Tiny Tina is by far one of the most weird. Players first meet Tina in Borderlands 2. She is a bomb expert with a bit of a tragic, traumatic past. It’s no wonder that when you meet her one of the first things she does is torture and kill the man who kidnapped her and her deceased family.

Tiny Tina delivers some of the best lines in the game including, “That’s right, bitches – my big brudder’s about to teach you some MANNERS. Nobody steals Mushy Snugglebites’ badonkadonk and lives!” and “You’re cordially invited BITCH!!!” Both golden words to live by to be sure. We love Tina; while she is clearly insane, she’s got a heart of gold.

Tingle from The Legend of Zelda series

Again, not everyone in Legend of the Zelda has their head on straight. But one that definitely doesn’t is Tingle the “fairy.” Or shall we say the man obsessed with fairies. Tingle makes a few appearances in the franchise following his first appearance in Majora’s Mask.

Tingle is extra weird because he’s willing to help Link out in a variety of ways, but charges insane prices when doing so. Help him escape from jail? Sure, he’ll help you out. But it’ll be upwards of 400 rupees per sea chart that you need him to decipher. We can’t think of a single person who likes this weird fairy man.

Wrecking Ball from Overwatch

When new Overwatch characters were getting announced, players would get super excited. New characters mean new dynamics being added to the game, new lore and more ways to play. But When Wrecking Ball was added to the game, the Overwatch community let out a collective disappointed sigh. Or at least we’d like to think it did.

Wrecking Ball is a hamster/robot combo hero – yes, you read that right. The hamster portion of the duo controls the robot who can shoot as well as roll around quickly at will. Okay, we know he wasn’t the first animal character in the game. But there’s a huge difference between an intelligent gorilla and a hamster. It’s just plain weird. Not to mention the fact that the hamster isn’t intelligent enough to talk. He just squeaks as he explodes your body into a million pieces with his grenades. But he’s cute, so we’ll give him that.

Bread from I Am Bread

Did you know that there’s a game where you play as a piece of bread? No? You’ve been missing out. I Am Bread is an “action-adventure” game where you control a piece of bread as he takes on the mission that all great bread hopes to go on during their lifetime: becoming toast. You’ve got to be careful though because if you touch too much of the ground your bread’s freshness and edibility will go down and that would just be a nightmare.

I Am Bread is actually really fun and challenging, but that doesn’t make its protagonist any more normal. The fact that there’s a game where you control a piece of bread is so out there and crazy we had to include this yeasty beasty on our list of weirdest game characters.

George Woodman from Deadly Premonition

Deadly Premonition George

Much like Borderlands, all of the characters in Deadly Premonition are pretty damn weird. They’re all over emotive, say bizarre things and are just so extremely strange. But perhaps the strangest of them all is George Woodman. George is the Sheriff of Greenvale, the location the game is based. He doesn’t like the protagonist York right off the bat and makes that obvious throughout the game.

By the end of the game George transforms into a gigantic demon and tries to kill York for uncovering his true identity. While much of the game George is just a normal guy with a bit of an attitude, this sudden change really throws the player for a loop. He gets a spot on this list for not only literally turning into a demon at the end of the game, but also for just being weird as heck. Period.

Don Paolo from the Professor Layton series

don paolo professor layton

The last weird character for our list is the villain Don Paolo from the Professor Layton series. Don Paolo first shows up in Professor Layton and the Curious Village when he disguises himself as an Inspector. He attempts to thwart the professor’s investigation and even accuses him of murder. It’s a mystery to the player until Professor Layton and the Unwound Future why Don Paolo hates the professor so much. It’s because he feels as though Layton stole his true love Claire away from him.

Having a grudge against the professor doesn’t necessarily make him weird, however. What’s weird is his strangely phenomenal way that he is able to disguise himself. He’s great at it. It’s not as though he puts on a moustache and people just suddenly don’t know it’s him. He goes all out. So, how is it that he is easily caught by the professor each time he attempts to thwart him when he’s so good at disguises? Weird, if you ask us. Super weird.

Becca knew that she would be addicted to video games for the rest of her life when she saw the first pixelated zombie shambling across her TV screen while playing Resident Evil 3. She particularly enjoys being scared, laughing until she cries, or just plain crying while experiencing games. When she isn't playing games she loves spoiling her cat Usagi and eating any kind of sushi she can find.
