After yesterday’s debacle of a game-breaking patch, Housemarque has issued a new update to Returnal, putting things back to how they were.
Rolled out last night, Patch 1.3.3 was intended to address various game bugs and balancing issues. Instead, it caused people’s games to crash and, in some dire circumstances, caused entire save files to be lost. Today, Housemarque has rectified the problems by putting out Patch 1.3.4.
The patch notes state that Returnal Patch 1.3.4 “reverts to a previous stable build (1.3.1), also addressing a known trophies issue, and fixing a keyboard exploit”.
The known keyboard exploit mentioned previously allowed players to plug a keyboard into their PS5 and access a debug mode of the game. Doing so allowed for numerous exploits. The trophies fix addresses an issue where certain trophies weren’t unlocking for players.
Unfortunately, if players’ save files were affected by previous patch 1.3.3, there’s not much to be done. On the official website, Housemarque lays out a number of scenarios:
- If your save file became corrupted with patch 1.3.3 but kept its file size, you can safely continue playing once you’ve installed patch 1.3.4.
- If patch 1.3.3 reduced your save file size to 0, it effectively deleted your save. It’s not salvageable unless you have a previous back-up stored on PS+.
If your console didn’t update to patch 1.3.3 – Housemarque was quick to pull the update – then you needn’t worry. The latest patch will simply fix a couple of bugs. But if your save file was corrupted and you have no back up, your only option is to start your Returnal journey again. Urgh.
