The Best Online Co-Op Games on Xbox One

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

A Way Out

It’s no secret that playing a game with your mates (generally) makes for a better experience than playing by yourself.

Well, unless your friends are massive douches who try to ruin the fun by arsing around instead of playing properly. And if that’s the case, then why are you even friends with them? Even so, there’s something special about sharing an experience with others, and that’s exactly what co-op gaming is for.

We’ve covered couch co-op games on Xbox One before, but sometimes you don’t want to share your screen, or you don’t want to have to invite your smelly friends over to hog the couch. Never fear; games exist out there that let you have all the fun of the co-op experience without having to share the sofa. Look no further than our list of the best online co-op games on Xbox One. No matter what genre of games you’re into, we’ve got something you’ll enjoy here.

Want to support GameSpew? If you decide to purchase any of the games featured in this list, please consider doing so by clicking our included Amazon affiliate links. It won’t cost you anything extra, but we’ll get a small slice of the purchase.

Battling through a hostile planet, shooting all manner of bizarre alien creatures and antagonist humans, is a lot of fun. It’s even more fun when you bring a friend along for the ride. Looter-shooter Outriders can be played solo, or you can team up with up to two others for some online co-op shenanigans.

With multiple character classes to choose from, all with their own skills to master, and a huge range of weapons and equipment to find and upgrade, Outriders provides about 30 hours of entertainment. It’s better with a friend or two though, especially when you reach the endgame Expeditions; timed challenges that see you battling through waves of enemies. So, if you enjoy fun RPG exploration, explosive gunplay and finding lots of loot, jump into Outriders. It’s one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

Diablo III: Eternal Collection

Diablo 3 PS4-min

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

It may have been out for quite a while now, but Diablo III still remains the ultimate co-op experience, both for local and online play. The game is exactly the same whether it’s played in single player or multiplayer, but the transition between both is seamless, meaning players can join in or drop out at any point without interrupting anyone’s progress. Up to four people can get in on the action for some serious monster-hunting madness.

What’s great is that the difficulty of Diablo III scales depending how many people are playing, so with a full roster of four, your enemies are going to be much tougher than if you were fighting them alone but you’ll probably find better loot. Also, unlike when playing in local co-op, you don’t have to hang around while everyone sorts out their inventory when playing online, leaving you free to continue exploring. Diablo III remains to be one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One, so grab a pal and set off on an intrepid journey to the depths of hell…

Saints Row: The Third Remastered

Saints Row The Third Remastered 2

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Saints Row: The Third, arguably the best Saints Row game, has received the remaster treatment. Though the process has been that thorough that it almost looks like a remake.

The Saints have never looked better, and neither has Steelport, which makes your explosive activities more fun than ever. Along with the base game, pretty much all of the DLC previously released for it is included, which means there are three expansions for you to also play through. And of course, nothing beats playing it in co-op with a friend.

If you have an Xbox One and love playing in online co-op, you really need to add Saints Row: The Third Remastered to your collection. It provides hours upon hours of absolute mayhem.

Torchlight 3

Torchlight III

If you’re into Diablo, then the chances are you’ll enjoy Torchlight III too. It’s not quite as dark or in-depth as Diablo III, but it offers a similar loot-finding experience. Players can choose between one of a number of character classes, and the options are rather interesting. You can be an on-wheels robot, for example, or a Railmaster in command of a small train that follows you around.

It’s not the longest game to complete, and the endgame content is a little lacking, but while you’re in the midst of it, Torchlight III offers one of the best online co-op experiences out there. Working together with your friends to defeat the game’s many enemies is a lot of fun – especially when you’re taking down one of the brutish bosses. Better yet, you all get your own pile of loot, so there’s no fighting.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Zombie Army 4: Dead War 2

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Zombie Army Trilogy was great when it released in 2015, but now it’s a bit shallow and its visuals are dated. It doesn’t matter though, because Zombie Army 4: Dead War is here.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is the ultimate online co-op game if you like nothing more than slaughtering hordes of zombies. It has a nine mission campaign full of hair-raising situations and a bucketload of challenges. And when you’re done with that there are four horde maps for you to have a go at. Get three friends in on the act and you can have hours of undead killing fun.

If you’re after one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One, look no further. Zombie Army 4: Dead War may not be all that clever, but it’s a great way to waste some time online.

A Way Out

A Way Out (1)

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

While all the other games on this list can be played solo if you prefer, A Way Out demands that you play it in co-op. You either enjoy it with someone online or sat at the side of you, or you don’t enjoy it at all.

Telling a compelling story is what A Way Out aims to achieve; one in which both players take on a very particular role. One of you plays Leo and the other is Vincent; together, you’ve got to figure out how to escape from prison. In between figuring out solutions to problems and engaging in shootouts, you’re able to relax with minigames like Connect 4, further building your bond with the other player. But will you still be friends by the end of the experience? Play A Way Out and find out. It’s one of the most unique games on this list, and one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One by a mile.

Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Dungeons review

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

What do you get if you cross Minecraft with Diablo? Minecraft Dungeons, that’s what.

Minecraft Dungeons is essentially ‘My First Diablo’. It’s a dungeon crawler that’s a little on the simple side, making it perfect for those who want to dip their toes into the genre. Don’t let its carefree exterior fool you though; depending on the difficulty you choose, it can be mighty fiendish.

Up to four people can group together to play Minecraft Dungeons in online co-op, and while they’re likely to blast through the game’s stages in a matter of hours, there are plenty of reasons to go back. Loot is of course one of them, and there are also many difficulty levels to tackle and secrets to find. Needless to say, whether you’re young or old, there’s a lot to get out of Minecraft Dungeons, making it one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World Capture monsters

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Hunting monsters is a tough but exciting activity. When you’ve got friends to hunt with, though, it becomes more manageable.

Going out on expeditions with friends in Monster Hunter World makes your time with it much more fruitful. Working as a team to take down gargantuan beasts, you’ll cheer when you’re victorious, and be utterly elated when you scavenge the resources required to upgrade your equipment. Then the addiction will kick in. You’ll strive to be a master hunter and acquire the best armour and weapons, and you simply won’t rest until you’ve reached your goal. And with friends by your side, you’ll love every minute of it. Monster Hunter World really is better when played in online co-op.

Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon 4 3

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Forza Horizon 4 is a game that certainly doesn’t need you to have a co-op partner by your side to have a good time. Hell, driving around the massive map of Great Britain is awesome regardless. But having your buddy driving around alongside you with the option of competing in the same events and challenges makes the game altogether more thrilling.

Let’s face it, AI opponents do get a little boring after a while. It’s nice to have some fresh competition, so facing off against your mate in a street race or off-road challenge gives you real inspiration to show them who’s boss. With literally hundreds of events to choose from, there’s plenty to keep you occupied, too. If you enjoy arcade racing, then Forza Horizon 4 is definitely one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Why have one game when you can have many?

Halo: The Master Chief Collection wasn’t perfect when it launched years ago. Work has been done on it since though, including an Xbox One X enhancement patch, and now it’s a must-have, especially if you like playing games in online co-op.

Every game in Halo: The Master Chief Collection – that’s Halo, Halo 3, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo ODST and Halo Reach – allows you to play its entire campaign with multiple players by your side. It undeniably makes each game more hectic, and therefore more fun. Then, when an argument develops, you can just jump into a deathmatch to settle the score. Sorted.

If you have an Xbox One and love online co-op, you need Halo: The Master Chief Collection. You just do. It’s easily one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

Man of Medan

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

It may be a movie-like story-driven experience, but Supermassive Games’ Man of Medan is surprisingly one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

In Man of Medan, players take control of numerous friends who’ve found themselves in a sticky situation after going on a diving excursion. Playing in online co-op, each player will take control of just a few of these friends, with their actions directly having an impact on the other player’s experience. It’s novel, and makes playing the game feel more natural and unpredictable.

Man of Medan may be a single-player game at heart, but its local and online co-op options really add another dimension to it. Make sure you give it a go if you’re after an unusual online co-op experience on Xbox One.

Strange Brigade

Strange Brigade 1-min

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

If you like solving puzzles and shooting mythical creatures with friends, Rebellion’s Strange Brigade is the game for you.

Building on the gameplay of the company’s previous co-op based shooter, Zombie Army Trilogy, Strange Brigade is a riotous affair with a great deal of humour. It’s perfectly fine if you want to play it by yourself, but get some friends, or strangers, in tow, and you’ll have much more fun as you blast through its campaign and then take on its Score Attack and Horde maps.

And take our advice: play as Gracie if you can – she’s hilarious!

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Wolfenstein Youngblood 2 (1)

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

The Wolfenstein games are great, but one thing has been missing from them: co-op gameplay. Not anymore, thanks to Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

B.J. Blazkowicz has gone missing, and in Wolfenstein: Youngblood it’s up to you to find him. In online co-op you and another player each take control of one of his daughters, and thanks to their futuristic suits they’re both blessed with powerful abilities.

With troublesome enemies standing in the way of the young duo rescuing their dad, players need to work together to overcome the harsh challenges thrown at them. When it comes to taking down Nazis, however, murder comes quite naturally.

It’s perhaps not quite as good as The New Order or The New Colossus, but Youngblood is still a good game. And its online co-op functionality makes it great to play with a friend.

World War Z

World War Z 2

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

If you’re not yet tired of zombies and want a game that demands you work effectively with others, why not give World War Z a go?

It may pretty much be a rip-off of Left 4 Dead, but World War Z gets enough right to be worthy of your time. It offers multiple episodes for you to work through in online co-op, each consisting of a few or so levels. And once you’re done, you can try them all over again with the difficulty set higher.

A range of character classes gives the game some depth, with new perks being unlocked as you level up. Weapons can also be upgraded, meaning that eventually you’re a force to be reckoned with. And you’ll need to be considering the size of some zombie hordes sent your way.

There’s no doubt about it: World War Z is currently one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

The Borderlands Series

Borderlands GOTY 4 (1)

The entire Borderlands series is Xbox One X enhanced

We love the Borderlands game here at GameSpew, and so we’re very happy that they’re now all available on Xbox One.

Thanks to Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel being remastered for Xbox One, they, along with Borderlands 3, have the capability to offer tens if not hundreds of hours of hilarious co-op antics. Explore alien worlds, shoot things in the face, and develop your character until they’re a total badass. You know you want to.

All the Borderlands games have online co-op support for up to four players, and no matter which you play the action is just so much fun. The only problem is that loot has to shared between you in all the games except Borderlands 3, so expect some arguments about who gets to keep the amazing gun you’ve just found.

The Division 2

The Division 2 3 (1)

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

If third-person military shooters are your thing, you need to add The Division 2 to your collection.

Improving on the foundations laid by the first title, The Division 2 is bigger, better and more varied. Working as a team, you’ll make your way through engaging main missions and a whole host of side content before finally reaching its endgame which will probably have you hooked. And did we mention that loads of loot is involved? Yeah, there’s loads of loot.

What’s really great about The Division 2, however, is the AI of your enemies. They put up a real challenge, realistically taking cover and trying to flank you. It makes every firefight unpredictable and interesting, which is great considering you’re likely to be playing the game for upwards of fifty hours.

Gears of War 4

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Few Xbox games are as seminal as the Gears of War series. Chances are, if you’re an Xbox owner, you’ve played at least one of them. All of the Gears of War games are playable on Xbox One, but we think that Gears of War 4 is the best one to play in online co-op. Why? Well, aside from looking absolutely amazing, we think it has the best campaign.

It’s not over once you’ve finished the main campaign either; Horde mode, which tasks you with surviving 50 waves against enemies of increasing difficulties is best played with a friend (or four) by your side. It’s been revised and expanded for Gears of War 4, making it the most comprehensive and engaging horde mode in Gears of War history.

Okay, so Gears 5 exists too, and that also provides a great online co-op experience, but we think Gears of War 4 is just better.

Crackdown 3

Crackdown 3 5

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Do you like jumping around open worlds like a superhero? Want to punch bad guys into next week? You need Crackdown 3 in your life.

While Crackdown 3 is perfectly playable as a single player game, it really shines when played in online co-op. Multiple agents can run, jump and climb around around the varied map at their leisure, which makes collecting the many hundreds of orbs strewn all over much easier. Also, when the shit hits the fan, it’s good to have some fellow agents by your side.

Crackdown 3 is all about having crazy fun, and it’s easier to have when there are people around to make that crazy fun even more crazy. It’s not the biggest game available, and it sure isn’t the cleverest, but Crackdown 3 is certainly one of the best online co-op games on Xbox One.

Dead Island Definitive Edition

What better way is there to spend your time stuck on a beautiful tropical island other than bashing zombies’ heads in with oars, crowbars and whatever else you can lay your hands on? Sure, what started out as a holiday in paradise may have become something of a nightmare, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a good time.

The Dead Island Definitive Collection is perfectly serviceable as a single-player jaunt, but when you add more players into the fray it becomes all the more fun. There’s a massive amount of gameplay on offer across both Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide, with plenty of side quests to complete alongside the main stories. Just don’t expect a true horror game; Dead Island, especially when playing in online co-op, is more about the fun and thrills than it is about the jump-scares.

As far as the best online co-op games on Xbox One go, this is one (well, actually two) of them.

Killing Floor 2

Killing Floor 2 Body 3

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

There aren’t many games as gory as Killing Floor 2. There aren’t many that are as much fun to play with friends, either, making Killing Floor 2 one of the best online co-op games available on Xbox One.

Killing Floor 2 demands you and up to three others to defend yourself against waves of horrific creatures on a range of maps. As you kill the monsters that are out to break you into pieces you’ll acquire money, and between rounds it can be spent to arm yourself with new weapons, as well as buy ammo and other useful goodies. Spend your money wisely though, otherwise you might not make it to the boss that lies at the end of each gauntlet.

With regular themed events, Killing Floor 2 is a great game to have installed on your console for occasional bouts of monster killing mayhem.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Vermintide 2 2

This game is Xbox One X enhanced

Brutal melee combat, grotesque monsters and loot: three things that we love in games. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 has them all.

Much like Left 4 Dead, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is an online co-op game that has you working with up to three others to reach the end of a map while hordes of monsters try and stop you. Your enemies are varied and you’ll find many obstacles in your path, but if you work as a team you can overcome any challenges that stands before you. And when you’re victorious you’ll be rewarded with goodies such as armour and weapons, that might just prove to be invaluable to tackling levels on harder difficulties.
