It’s July and, right on cue, here are July’s PlayStation Plus Games.
PlayStation Plus allows you to play PlayStation games online, with the three monthly games essentially being a sweetener. Unfortunately you can’t actually play them till July 6th but there’s at least one title here that’s worth waiting for. Here’s what’s on offer this month:
- A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS5)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
- WWE2K Battlegrounds (PS4)
PlayStation 4 games can be played on the PlayStation 5, thanks to the console’s backwards compatibility, so if you’ve got a PS5 you can play Black Ops 3 and Battlegrounds. However, even though A Plague Tale: Innocence it’s also available on PS4 it’s only the PS5 version that’s “free” this month.
The cream of the crop has to be A Plague Tale: Innocence, which casts you as the harried but resourceful Amicia de Rune, a medieval teenager who, with her brother, has to survive a massive plague of rats. In our review we stated that the “combination of gripping storytelling, excellent characterisation and varied gameplay… makes for an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.”
As for the other two? They’re less appealing, unless you want Black Ops III for its multiplayer alone, since we found its single player campaign to be such a disappointment. As for WWE2K Battlegrounds? In theory the game’s fun but so much of its content is locked behind monetisation, we recommend you give it a pass.
So, not a great month for PlayStation Plus, especially if you don’t own a PS5. But A Plague Tale should, at least, have you hooked for a good few hours and while we’re loathe to spoil things, there are second-half mechanics that will have you grinning like an idiot. Let’s hope PS4 owners get less of a raw deal next month.
