When in combat in Neo: The World Ends With You, you’ll see ‘Drop the Beat’ pop up quite a lot. But what does it mean?
Combat in Neo: The World Ends With You is rather different from most other RPGs. Your characters’ skills are dictated by pins they wear, and with hundreds of pins to collect throughout the game, there’s a huge amount of potential combat skills at hand. Whichever you choose, though, will be assigned a button – and when you press that button, the character wearing the pin will attack. And once you’ve attacked enough, you’ll see ‘Drop the Beat’ pop up.
When you see ‘Drop the Beat’ in Neo: The World Ends With You, it simply means switch to another character. Attack that enemy with another character, and you’ll successfully ‘drop the beat’, as they say – and you’ll raise the percentage towards your special attack (which you can see at the top of the screen).
You only get a small window to Drop the Beat though, so if you miss it, your special attack counter will start going down. So in order to keep it up and increase the amount of damage you do to your enemies, look out for ‘Drop the Beat’ popping up, and ensure you keep switching characters.
It’s a fine balancing act, since every characters’ attack has its own cooldown, and you can only perform so many attacks before it’s exhausted. So choose your pins carefully, and don’t simply mash attacks once you’re in battle.
