Ever wanted to punch a Beholder in the face? Paint the Town Red has you covered.
This ridiculous, block-based brawler resembles a hyper-violent Minecraft, except instead of building things you’re demolishing heads. It’s not just the violence that makes it stand out but the fact that, like some angry, gin-sodden Doctor Who, you can punch your way across time and reality.
It launched a few days ago and its launch trailer really is something to behold. Not only does it showcase the sheer variety of in-game locations and foes, it has a few cheeky nods to other titles. We spotted references to Half-Life 2 (though we could be reading too much into that crowbar), Superhot and Dungeons & Dragons in amongst all the gore. The game does, in fact, include an entire rogue-lite adventure, so there’s guaranteed to be plenty of monster murder.
We dipped into Paint the Town Red when it hit Early Access and definitely got a kick out of it, though we did spot a few sticking points; a massive six years later, it’s a fully-fledged game. If you want a taste of the full product you can download a demo from Steam. Or, if the trailer has already swayed you, you can buy Paint the Town Red now on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.
