An RPG about dodgeball? Sounds… weird. But it works. Surprisingly well.
Dodgeball Academia, out now on PC and consoles, is a very fine RPG that also happens to be about dodgeball. In it, you play as Otto, a new kid at the prestigious Dodgeball Academia. It’s a school all about dodgeball. Yes, it’s far-fetched, but that doesn’t matter. What does matter is the fact that Dodgeball Academia is packed so full of colourful art, adventure, and engaging battles (dodgeball) that you’ll be hooked within minutes.
Your first task as Otto is to find a team of dodgeball players so you can enter the school’s tournament. Getting a couple more players isn’t too difficult, but then you’ll need to secure yourself a handful of tickets that will allow you to enter. That, again, wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the pesky rival teams who all have it in for you.
This has all the makings of a true old-school RPG. Except, instead of saving the world from destruction or taking down some corrupt megacorporation, you’re… trying to become the best dodgeball player? Dodgeball Academia might not have the urgency of a traditional narrative (you do have to get to class on time, though!) but it has just as much fun, and just as many wonderful and wacky characters. There’s even loot to collect, side quests to complete, and a large world waiting to be explored.
Your first few hours in Dodgeball Academia will be confined to the grounds of the school. Thankfully, Dodgeball Academia is a rather impressive, sprawling school, with buildings spread over a large, picturesque campus. There’s plenty to do and see here, and plenty of dodgeball fights to get involved in. As you’d expect, fights play out like standard games of dodgeball; you need to toss the ball at your opponents, with a hit taking off HP. On the defensive, you’ll need to avoid being hit, and catch incoming balls if you can. You also have special moves and power-ups to use to really get the better of your opponents.
Eventually, you’ll be able to leave the school grounds, exploring the surrounding areas. This isn’t the type of game that’s going to take you to far-off lands, but it doesn’t need to be. There’s a perfectly-formed world here that contains everything it needs to, and it’s a pleasure to explore.
The main quest line will see you engage in the dodgeball tournament while overcoming various obstacles thrown at you by Dodgeball Academia‘s main antagonists. But outside of that, there are side quests to complete, that see you helping fellow students with various issues. Plenty of NPCs will also want to challenge you to a bout of dodgeball, of course – and doing so will earn you XP, gain you money and new items.
If you like the idea of a traditional RPG with a far-from-traditional story, give Dodgeball Academia a try. We’re having a blast with it so far. It’s colourful, quirky and packed with character; it’s the sort of thing that’s hard to put down once you’ve started.
Dodgeball Academia is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. It’s also included as part of Xbox Game Pass.
