Tetris 99’s Maximus Cup is back and with it, players have the opportunity to earn a Skyward Sword theme for the game.
Yes, “earn”, so you can get you hands on the theme no matter how bad you are at this Nintendo Switch puzzler, you just might have to play more matches. You’ll have to be quick, though, the Maximus cup runs from August 6th to August 9th and you’ll need a Nintendo Switch and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription (which gives you Tetris 99 for free) to participate.
If you’ve never played Tetris 99 before, you’re in for a treat, and possibly a teensy bit of trauma. It’s absolutely manic, a battle royale game where your completed Tetromino lines get dumped on someone else’s screen and they, in turn, can do the same to you. There’s also a single player mode you can purchase but there’s nothing quite like crushing the hopes and dreams of a human player.
To get the Skyward Sword theme you need to play Tetris 99’s online mode during the event period. You’ll earn points based on your placement in a match; the higher you place, the quicker you’ll unlock the theme. Once you’ve racked up enough points the theme is yours to keep.
Why a Skyward Sword theme? Because a HD remaster of that particular Legend of Zelda entry launched on July 16th. The theme will feature Skyward Sword music, background art and even Zelda-style Tetrominos and, given it’s essentially free (you can get a seven day Nintendo Switch Online trial), what have you got to lose?
