Wreckfest Carmageddon

Wreckfest Gets a Carmageddon-Themed Crossover Tournament

Could we be getting a new Carmageddon game? Not right now but Wreckfest is giving us the next best thing, a Carmageddon-themed crossover.

Carmaggedon isn’t as recognisable a name as it once was, but the original racer was both ridiculously entertaining and hugely controversial. It was essentially a video game version of Roger Corman’s Death Race 2000, and had you racing and wrecking your way around several tracks, each filled with innocent pedestrians who you could kill for extra time.

Wreckfest trades civilians for zombies (which the censored version of Carmageddon also did) but, as of right now, lets you unlock Carmageddon protagonist Max Damage’s car by racing around two tracks, Bleak City and Death Canyon. Dubbed the “Carmageddon Tournament”, there’s no word as to whether this is a permanent addition to Wreckfest or a time-limited event.

Still, we can’t fault developers Bugbear Entertainment’s attention to detail. The tracks have the same angular appearance as the original Carmageddon tracks. How did this crossover come about? It won’t have been a big deal; THQ Nordic, who publish Wreckfest, purchase the rights to Carmageddon in 2018, so they’re free to do whatever they want with the property.

Carmageddon Tournament is available right now across all platforms, PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S|X and Xbox One. You do, of course, need the full version of Wreckfest but if you’re on the fence about buying it you can check out our review here.
