Bad news for those of you who were planning to attend the all-new EGX Birmingham: it’s been cancelled.
The official EGX Twitter account put out a message this afternoon stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the postponement of EGX Birmingham 2022.” It uses the word ‘postponement’, but the rest of the statement makes no suggestion of a re-arranged date, instead drawing attention to EGX London (which is scheduled for October). It’s likely, then, that no other EGX Birmingham dates will be on the cards until next year.
Why the cancellation? The official statement says that “many partners and brands are not yet ready to return to live events”. In other words, not enough exhibitors have signed up to make the event worthwhile.
EGX Birmingham was EGX’s first return to a venue outside of London since the main event moved from the NEC back in 2019. Scheduled for 4-6 March, it was to replaced EGX Rezzed, which focused on indie games and was held in London’s Tobacco Docks in March every year. EGX Birmingham was announced to have a large indie presence, but would also provide space for larger, AAA developers and publishers too.
Sadly, if you were planning on going, you’ll have to wait until (hopefully) next year now. EGX’s official statement states that anyone who has already purchased a ticket will receive a full refund in the next few weeks. If you need help with a refund, more information is available on the EGX website.
